You've got a yearning for an authentic off-roading Jeep. Then you need to decide which Wrangler is right for you. Here's a quick guide to the original Wrangler and the Wrangler Unlimited.

For the fifth year in a row, Kelley Blue Book has honored the Wrangler Unlimited with the Best Resale Value Award in the crowded midsize SUV and crossover class. The Unlimited also has a Lowest Cost to Own Award from Kelley Blue Book. The Wrangler, on the other hand, is often recognized as one of the best vehicles for under $25,000, and it recently earned the 2016 Off-Road Utility Vehicle of Texas Award. The Rubicon editions of both Wrangler styles earned the 4x4 of the Decade Award from Four Wheeler Magazine.

Performance

Both Wrangler styles get the assistance of a powerful engine. The V-6 has best-in-class horsepower, rated at 285. For even more kick, this engine delivers 260 lb.-ft. of torque. Four-wheel drive is always standard, but there are two types. Editions from the Sport to the Sahara are equipped with CommandTrac. It guarantees best-in-class winter performance by delivering equal power to all four corners. Jeep has calibrated this system to serve you well on the highway or the trail.

For the ultimate four-wheel drive performance, Rock-Trac offers even more control. This allows the driver to get more torque during slow-speed crawls. The 4:1 low-gear ratio adds to the ability of these off-roaders to go further than most SUV drivers could ever dare. Off-roading capability is assured by both Wranglers' high ground clearance. Bumpers are mounted high to escape damage, and skid plates prevent damage to vital systems. The Wrangler's smaller size, lighter weight, and tighter turning circle gives it a slight trail advantage over the Wrangler Unlimited, when similarly equipped.

Appearance

Individuals and couples tend to go for the regular Wrangler. The Wrangler is a two-door, four-seat SUV. It has 88.4 cu.ft. of passenger space and about 13 cu.ft. in the cargo hold. With the seats folded, there's 56.5 cu.ft. of open space. The Unlimited is a four-door SUV. With five seats and 104 cu.ft. of passenger space, the Unlimited is a family favorite. The large cargo hold offers 31 cu.ft., and you can fold the rear seat to claim up to 71 cu.ft. Both Wrangler styles offer a choice of soft-tops or a hardtop Removable doors and a folding windshield are favorite options.

The interior of each has been designed for daily living while keeping in mind that these Wranglers like to get dirty. Jeep has equipped them with durable, washable floors with drain plugs. On the fancier side, however, you can get your Wrangler or Wrangler Unlimited with handsome Sedosa cloth or rich McKinley leather. Illuminated cup holders are a good touch for these Jeeps that are bound to see some midnight adventures. Just to make sure you enjoy the benefits of modern living, Jeep also offers heated front seats and a UConnect dash screen.

Safety

Both Wrangler styles have a full contingent of airbags. They also have extras for open air driving, such as padded roll bars. Electronic stability control regulates throttle and brake distribution to keep you on track. This reduces oversteer, understeer, and common traction issues. It also corrects for imbalances that can cause rollovers. The Wrangler's all-speed traction control changes the calibrations for 4-Lo driving. The ABS system has Brake Assist to recognize and improve emergency braking.
