Rugged SUVs are one of the most popular vehicle categories in America. People are attracted to the powerful engines and towing capacities of standard size SUVs, but they also want a touch of sophistication and next generation technology on the inside, as well. Two vehicles that offer their own spin on the standard SUV are the 2017 Jeep Cherokee and the 2017 Hyundai Tucson. Both have advanced safety features and comfortable cabins, but the 2017 Jeep Cherokee has more options for the savvy auto enthusiast.

Features & Options

Both the Jeep Cherokee and the Hyundai Tucson got some updates for their 2017 debuts. This is the third makeover for the Hyundai Tucson, but the Jeep Cherokee has had a much more successful pedigree. The Jeep Cherokee has an updated front end with xenon headlights standard on all the vehicle models, except the Sport trim. It's the base model. Also, the Jeep Cherokee Overland cements its place at the top of the premium packages. The Tucson's pricier model trims seem to have gotten all the tech upgrades for the vehicle's interior. The Hyundai Tucson updates were mostly targeted at edging out the Ford Escape, a much smaller, more economical crossover SUV.

Performance

The 2017 Cherokee has front and rear independent suspension, which gives it greater handling both on and off the road. The Hyundai Tucson has a rear multi-link suspension system that is supported by a host of automated and electronic handling features. The 2017 Hyundai Tucson gives you two different engine options: a 2.0 Liter four cylinder and a pricier 1.6 Liter turbo-charged four cylinder engine. The latter is the more powerful of the two with 175 horsepower and 195 lb. ft. of torque. The Jeep Cherokee has three engine configurations. There are two options that are centered on a fuel-efficient 2.4 Liter inline four. Both are paired with a seamless nine speed shiftable automatic drivetrain. Then, there's the 3.6 Liter V6 which helps you get the most out of the Jeep's 4x4 Active Drive system.

Interior & Design

The interior of the 2017 Hyundai Tucson is economical. It's everything you need and nothing more. Leather seating surfaces are only available on the Limited package, as well as a sliding sunroof. On the other hand, the 2017 Jeep Cherokee Limited, High Altitude, Trailhawk L Plus, and Overland trims have either standard or optional leather seats. The Jeep Cherokee also has a touchscreen color display on every model, whereas the Tucson Limited is the only package to get a touchscreen. It's just for navigation. When it comes to interior cargo space, the Jeep Cherokee also takes the top spot. It has a built-in cargo management system that gives you an available storage locker, first aid kit, collapsible cooler and more.

The Cherokee offers you more quality without having to jump up to the pricier model trims. Yet, the only way to truly know which one of these vehicles is better would be to drive one yourself. With just one test drive you'll feel the difference in the 2017 Jeep Cherokee's power and that of the 2017 Hyundai Tucson. Your local Jeep dealer can answer any questions you have and help you make the right decision for your next vehicle.
